Watching the sunset is one of the simplest pleasures in Tenerife — but where you watch it changes the whole evening.
You can see the light fade from a beach in Costa Adeje, sit by the ocean in La Caleta, watch the cliffs of Los Gigantes turn gold, drive up to a mountain viewpoint or leave the coast behind and watch it from the Atlantic.
There is no single best place. It depends on whether you want easy access, dramatic scenery, romance, photos or privacy. Here is how the options compare, from the people who sail these waters every evening.

Costa Adeje: an easy sunset close to your hotel
If you are staying in the south, Costa Adeje is the easiest place to catch the sunset without travelling. The coast has beaches, promenades, restaurants and open views of the Atlantic, so sunset fits naturally between the beach and dinner.
The atmosphere depends on where you stop: some beaches are lively, quieter stretches of the promenade are more relaxed. The big advantage is convenience — spend the afternoon by the sea and simply stay for the evening light.

La Caleta: a calmer coastal evening
La Caleta, the former fishing village at the northern end of Costa Adeje, feels quieter and more intimate than the busy resort beaches. As the light changes, the Atlantic becomes the natural focus.
A walk along the coast followed by dinner by the sea is an easy, special evening — a good choice for couples who simply want to slow down.

Los Gigantes: sunset with dramatic cliffs
If scenery is your priority, Los Gigantes is one of the most impressive settings on the island. The cliffs rise straight out of the Atlantic, and in the evening the contrast between dark rock, ocean and sky is striking — a favourite with photographers.
The drawback is distance: from Costa Adeje or further south, allow extra time to get there and back. If you are already exploring the west of the island, it is a great place to end the day.
Mountain viewpoints: above the clouds
Sunset in Tenerife does not have to be by the sea. From the volcanic highlands you can sometimes see the Atlantic, neighbouring islands and layers of cloud below you — a completely different mood from the beach.
Remember that conditions at altitude are not the same as on the coast: it is much cooler, visibility can change quickly, and you need enough time to reach your viewpoint safely before the sun goes down.

The beach: simple, free and always popular
Sometimes the simplest option is the best: find a spot on the sand and stay until the light fades. For families it is ideal — no schedule, no transfer, nothing to organise.
The trade-off is privacy. Popular beaches get busy at sunset, especially in high season, and your view may include other people, sunbeds and buildings.

Watching the sunset from the Atlantic
From the sea, sunset feels completely different. Once the yacht leaves the marina, the coast moves into the background and you are no longer looking at the ocean from Tenerife — you are looking back at Tenerife from the ocean.
There are no buildings in front of you, no crowded viewpoint and no fixed spot. The yacht, the coastline, the horizon and the changing light all become part of the evening — and on a private yacht, it is just your group on board.

Coast or sea: which is better?
Both can be wonderful; they are simply different experiences.
| Choose the coast if you want… | Choose a private yacht if you want… |
|---|---|
| easy access and no planning | privacy for your own group |
| restaurants nearby | open Atlantic views |
| a free experience | a quieter atmosphere |
| to come and go when you like | sailing as part of the evening |
| a memorable setting for a special occasion |
The coast is perfect for a simple sunset view. A yacht makes sense when you want the sunset to be part of a bigger experience.
Is a sunset yacht only for couples?
Not at all. Private sunset sailing is popular for anniversaries, honeymoons and proposals, but it works just as well for birthdays, family evenings and small groups of friends.
The yacht is reserved for your group only, so everyone can relax, talk, take photos and enjoy the evening at their own pace.
What time should you plan for?
Sunset in Tenerife changes through the year — from around 18:00 in winter to around 21:00 in early summer — so check the time for your date. On land, arrive early enough to enjoy the changing light before the sun touches the horizon.
On a yacht, you leave the marina early enough to settle in, sail a little and reach open water before the best light. That is why our sunset departure time is set for your date rather than fixed all year.

What if it is cloudy?
A cloudy evening is not necessarily a disappointing one. Clouds often catch the colour and create layers of light over the Atlantic. Some evenings are bright and clear, others softer or more dramatic — that is nature.
From a yacht, the sailing, the coast and the time with your group are part of the evening whatever the sky does.
What to bring
Even in Tenerife it cools down once the sun goes down, especially at sea or in the mountains. Bring:
- a light jacket or an extra layer;
- sunglasses and sunscreen for the early part of the evening;
- your phone or camera;
- swimwear if your yacht trip may include a swim;
- comfortable, non-slip shoes.
On a yacht, leave big bags and loose items behind — you will be more comfortable on deck.
The best sunset for…
Couples. A beach and dinner is simple and romantic; La Caleta is calm; Los Gigantes is dramatic. If privacy matters most, a private yacht wins — just the two of you (or your group) on the Atlantic.
Families. A beach in Costa Adeje is easiest: no booking, restaurants and facilities nearby. For something special, a private yacht gives children space and a calmer atmosphere than a big shared boat, sometimes with a swim before sunset.
Photographers. Los Gigantes for dramatic cliffs, mountain viewpoints for panoramas above the clouds, the coast for palm trees and beaches. From a yacht you get the open horizon, the coastline from the water and the freedom to move around for different angles.

Is a private sunset cruise worth it?
If you only want to see the sun touch the horizon, you do not need a yacht — Tenerife has plenty of free spots.
A private sunset cruise is worth it when the experience around the sunset matters: your own yacht and skipper, a few hours sailing on the Atlantic, open views of the coast, drinks and snacks, a swim when the sea allows and a quiet, personal atmosphere.
For couples, families and small groups, it turns an ordinary evening into one of the highlights of a holiday. Our private sunset cruise costs €399 for the whole yacht, for up to 11 guests.
